Surface Mining Projects

Pioneer Mining Co. is actively mining in Ganes Creek, a region known for its rich gold deposits and history of producing large nuggets.

Location & Maps

The Ganes Creek placer extends along the valley bottom and on benches for approximately 4 miles in the Iditarod quadrangle and about the same distance in the adjacent Ophir quadrangle. It rises in the Beaver Mountains and flows northeasterly for over 50 miles into the Innoko River. Upper Ganes Creek formerly flowed north into the Beaver Creek drainage from a point near the mouth of Last Chance Creek, about 4 miles above the mouth of Spaulding Creek.

Historical Information

Gold was discovered at Ganes Creek in the summer of 1906 by Thomas Ganes and his partners in the gravel bars above the creek’s mouth. Claims were staked from the source to the mouth, and various parties mined the creek almost continuously. Around 1994, the Clark/Wiltz partnership purchased the claims, which heads in the Beaver Mountains and flows into the Innoko River along the Iditarod trail.

Ganes Creek is famous for producing big nuggets, including a 33-ounce and an 88-ounce nugget, with the largest ever found weighing 122 ounces. Ganes Creek still produces large nuggets today.
